The
American Name Society was founded in 1951 to promote
onomastics, the study of names and naming practices,
both in the United States and abroad. It is a non-profit
organization that seeks to find out what really is in a
name, and to investigate cultural insights, settlement
history, and linguistic characteristics revealed in
names.Focusing on the understanding of names in all forms, the Society provides members with several vehicles for the discussion and publication of onomastic theory, views and concepts:
* an annual meeting Names: A Journal of Onomastics welcomes original contributions that match the aims and scope of the journal on the understanding that their contents have not previously been published or are currently submitted for publication elsewhere. All submissions will be sent to independent referees.
See the Tables of Contents for Names at: Ingenta
*** The Society meets once a year in a major city where members participate in paper presentations, panel discussions, and other activities. In January of 2013, the ANS met in Boston, Massachusetts. In January 2014 the meeting will be held on Minneapolis, Minnesota.
